Black seed oil comes from the seeds of the Nigella sativa plant, also known as black cumin. It's been studied for several areas of health, including immune support, respiratory health, digestion, and inflammation.

But there's more to black seed oil than those things. Researchers have also looked at its effects on blood sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure, asthma, stomach issues, and even parasites.

When we're choosing products for our store, I like to know what's in them and what the research says. I also like being able to share that information with our customers so they have a better understanding of what they're buying.

So here's some of what I've learned about black seed oil and why I think it's a supplement worth considering.

What Makes Black Seed Oil Worth Looking Into?

One of the main things you'll hear about with black seed oil is thymoquinone.

It's a substance found in the oil that has been studied for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

We've all heard about antioxidants, but what are they doing for our bodies?

Our bodies produce free radicals as part of normal processes. Things like pollution, smoking, and environmental exposures can add to that. When there's more than our bodies can handle, it creates oxidative stress, which can damage cells.

Antioxidants help protect our cells from that damage.

Thymoquinone is one of the reasons researchers have been studying black seed oil for different areas of health, especially when inflammation is involved.

Inflammation and Immune Support

We hear about inflammation all the time, but it's not always a bad thing. Our bodies use inflammation to respond to injuries and infections. It's part of how we protect ourselves and heal.

The problem comes when inflammation continues longer than it should.

Researchers have studied black seed and how it affects markers of inflammation in the body, including C-reactive protein (CRP), which can be measured through bloodwork.

A 2025 research review looked at 82 clinical trials involving more than 5,000 participants. The findings included improvements in several inflammation markers and measurements related to antioxidant activity.

Since inflammation plays a part in so many health concerns, I think this is one of the more interesting reasons to consider black seed oil.

Blood Sugar, Cholesterol, and Blood Pressure

Now this is an area of the research I found interesting.

A 2025 review looked at 16 clinical trials involving adults with type 2 diabetes. Researchers found improvements in fasting blood sugar, HbA1c, total cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol.

Another review from 2025 looked at 82 clinical trials and found improvements in blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, and other measurements related to heart health.

That's a bit more than what most of us think of when we hear black seed oil.

Something worth knowing is that these studies used different forms of black seed, including oil and seed preparations. The amounts used varied as well.

But when I see research involving this many participants showing improvements in these areas, I think it's worth sharing. Black seed is being studied for more than just immune support, and the results for blood sugar and cholesterol are encouraging.

Asthma and Respiratory Health

Black seed oil has also been studied in adults with asthma.

In a 2017 clinical trial, researchers enrolled 80 adults with asthma who received either black seed oil capsules or a placebo.

After four weeks, the group taking black seed oil had better asthma control scores than the placebo group.

Researchers also found a reduction in eosinophils. These are white blood cells involved in allergic inflammation.

A 2020 review of four clinical trials reported improvements in asthma control scores and some measurements of lung function.

What I like about this research is that they weren't just looking at how the participants felt. They were also measuring changes in the body.

Digestive Health and Stomach Concerns

When we talk about digestive health in the shop, probiotics, fiber, and digestive enzymes are some of the first things that come to mind.

But black seed has also been studied for digestive issues.

One study involved 70 adults with functional dyspepsia. That's a medical term for recurring upper stomach discomfort, which can include bloating, stomach pain, and feeling full after eating.

Researchers used a preparation containing black seed oil and honey for eight weeks. The group receiving it reported improvements in their digestive symptoms compared with the placebo group.

Another study involved 51 adults with H. pylori, a bacterium that can live in the stomach and contribute to gastritis and ulcers.

Researchers studied black seed supplementation alongside the participants' existing treatment. They found a higher rate of H. pylori clearance in the group receiving black seed compared with the placebo group.

The digestive symptom scores didn't show the same difference, but the findings are still interesting.

These were smaller studies, and the preparations used weren't the same as every bottle of black seed oil on a store shelf. But it's another area where black seed has shown some promising results.

What About Parasites?

This is another part of the research I wanted to include because it's a topic that comes up when discussing herbs and supplements.

Researchers have looked at black seed oil and its effects on certain parasites, including Schistosoma mansoni, a parasitic worm that can cause schistosomiasis.

In a 2016 study involving infected mice, researchers found that black seed oil reduced the number of worms. They also found changes in parasite egg production.

Other laboratory and animal studies have examined how black seed affects parasites and their eggs.

The interesting part is that researchers are looking at how substances in black seed may affect the survival and reproduction of certain parasites.

Most of this research has been done in animals or laboratories. We don't have enough human studies to say black seed oil can help with a parasitic infection in humans by itself.

But I wanted to include it because it shows another area being explored, and I'd like to see more research done on it.

Not All Black Seed Oil Is the Same

Now here's something I think is important when you're buying black seed oil.

You'll find it in liquid form and softgels. Some products contain 100% black seed oil, while others have additional ingredients.

You may also see cold-pressed on the label. That means the oil was extracted without using high heat.

Another thing to look for is thymoquinone content. The amount can vary from one product to another, and not every manufacturer lists it on the label.

A few things I would check before choosing one:

• Is it 100% black seed oil, or are there other ingredients?

• How much black seed oil is in each serving?

• Does the label list the thymoquinone content?

• Is the oil cold-pressed?

• Does the manufacturer provide information about testing and quality?

Just because one bottle costs more doesn't mean it's a better product.

And while the research is encouraging, keep in mind that not every black seed oil on the shelf is the same as the preparations used in these studies.

That's why I think it's worth looking at the ingredients, the serving size, and the company making it before deciding which one to buy.

A Few Things to Know Before Using Black Seed Oil

As with any supplement, there are a few things to consider before adding black seed oil.

Some may experience stomach discomfort or allergic reactions. Research also suggests it may affect blood sugar and blood pressure.

If you're pregnant, nursing, or have a health condition, check with your healthcare provider before using it.

Final Thoughts

One thing I enjoy about owning a supplement store is learning more about the products we carry. There's so much more to them than what you can read on the front of a bottle.

Black seed oil is a good example.

We hear about it for immune support, but when you start looking at the research, you find studies involving inflammation, blood sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure, respiratory health, digestion, and parasites.

Some of these areas have more human research behind them than others. But the findings give us a lot to think about when considering black seed oil as part of supporting our health.

We carry both liquid black seed oil and softgels here. If you're interested in trying it, we can show you the different options and help you understand what's in each one.
